Lethbridge collaboration aims to boost film industry in southern Alberta

A new Lethbridge-based initiative called Screen Lethbridge is a collaboration between the City of Lethbridge and Economic Development Lethbridge designed to attract film productions and develop the local creative economy in southern Alberta. The project aims to make it easier and more accessible for filmmakers to shoot in the area by simplifying the filming process and promoting the region as a filming destination, following the economic benefits seen from productions like The Last of Us and Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Goals of Screen Lethbridge:
  • Attract productions:
Position Lethbridge and southern Alberta as a prime location for filming.

  • Simplify filming:
Make the filming process clearer, more accessible, and filmmaker-friendly for external companies and local crews.

  • Support local talent:
Provide resources and opportunities to support and grow the local film industry and its filmmakers.

  • Boost the economy:
Capture a larger share of the multi-billion-dollar film industry operating in Alberta.

Background:
  • The initiative is part of the City of Lethbridge’s Creative Industries program.
  • Southern Alberta has already seen success with productions like The Last of Us and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which created significant economic impact.
  • Screen Lethbridge aims to build on this success to further develop the region’s creative sector.
